Straight photo edits like this are my least favorite kind of edits. I find them kind of boring, because there is no room for imagination or creativity, which is what I love about doing graphics. But the majority of edit requests we get on Reddit are for basic photo edits, so I am trying to improve my skill with them.
This was a good request to practice on because it had 2 major challenges:
- The photo of the toddler was taken in a shaded area, while the photo of the background was in full sunlight, so matching the lighting and shadows would be a huge challenge.
- The photo of the background was very low resolution compared to the subject image, and sizing it up to fit made the image very pixelated.
I know that this image does not look great, but it was actually the best of all the submissions (it was a free request) and the one that the requester chose. And considering my lack of experience with these kinds of edits, I think I actually did a decent job, particularly considering the difficulty level. I have a friend who does photo editing professionally, and she told me that she typically would not even bother trying to work with 2 images that were so different, but of course since she works commercially, all the images she works with are taken by professional photographers, so she can afford to be a little picky, LOL!
