My Niece as a Cherub
The Results
First I used photoshop to cut my niece away from the background of the photo. Then I used ChatGPT to generate some cherubs that were in a similar pose to my niece (see elements below). ChatGPT is not great at copying faces, of course, but this gave me a nice background to work with, as well as a set of wings and the angel’s garment.
I cut out the wings and robe and used the Photoshop warp tool to fit them over my niece’s photo. As you can see, parts of her original outfit were still showing, so I had to edit those out by hand and reconstruct her cheek.
Next I chose another of the ChatGPT images that I really liked the background on and completely removed the original angel, leaving me with just the sky and cloud background, which I pasted my new compiled image onto.
You may notice that I was still missing a foot for my niece, which had been cut off in the photo. I used Photoshop’s generative fill here to add in the missing part of the foot. I also did not like the fact that my niece’s hair was all sweaty and plastered to her head that day, so I generated some new hair for her as well that better matched the painting.
The next step was to make the photo elements match the painted AI elements. This was a 2 step process. First I used the Oil Paint Filter in photoshop to give the image a quick overall painted look, and then I imported it into Corel Painter and repainted over the entire thing to help blend it all in together and make it more cohesive.
So there you have it, now you know the basic steps I use to compile a photo into a painted scene!
The Steps & Elements of My Edit
As you can see, the angel generated by AI was not in the exact same position, and looked nothing like my niece!
The warp tool combined with some creative cutting, pasting and cloning allowed me to roughly fit the wings and robe to my niece.
I had to remove the original angel so that when I pasted in my niece, the other angel would not show underneath. I actually chose a different version of the AI angel to do this with, because I liked the cloud formation better.
